The Review:

Vicolo Columbina is a Michelin listed restaurant situated in the heart of the historic centre of Bologna, near the market and Piazza Maggiore.  Chef Leonora Rinaldi creates outstanding traditional Bolognese cuisine.  The restaurant is very popular, so booking is essential.

Stuart Clarke Restaurant ReviewI ordered the antipasti of a potato and mortadella souffle, with a Parmesan crisp, Parmigiano Reggiano cream, and balsamic vinegar.  This was a delicious twice baked souffle packed with mortadella and served with a silky cheese sauce.

We tried the primi courses of tortellini in capon broth, and the tagliatelle with Bolognese ragu.  Both were extremely good.  The tortellini were exceptionally flavoursome with thin pasta, served with a very tasty chicken broth.  Pasta dishes in Bologna are totally different to those we usually have in the UK.  The ragu seems to have been reduced more that we would normally have here, with much more flavour and texture, and you never have spaghetti with a ragu sauce, its only ever tagliatelle.

Next, we ordered the secondi courses of beef steak from the Appennines served with Bolognese pesto crumb and Sangiovese wine sauce, as well as the cockerel served with mashed potatoes and black truffle shavings.  These were accompanied with a salad side dish with radicchio, balsamic vinegar, and bacon.  Again, these were both very good.

The food and service at Vicolo Columbina are excellent.  The wine list has a good range of Italian wine options at reasonable prices.  The location of the restaurant is right in the heart of the city, so it is easily accessible if you are exploring the centre.

I highly recommend a visit if you are in Bologna.
