Review: There is a great new menu at Larder in Lichfield. If you want to see more about previous trips, look at my two previous reviews – Larder, 25 January 2019 and Larder, 27 January 2019

We went for the seven course tasting menu and it was fabulous. This is my favourite restaurant in Lichfield and is well worth a visit.

There are no matching wine lists at the moment, so we chose our own with the help of the restaurant manager.

The first two courses were accompanied by a Nicolas Rouzet, Touraine, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, 2017. This has a 4.1 rating on Vivino. There were citrus notes and tropical fruits that matched the lobster and scallop dishes extremely well

With the turbot we tried a very good Ken Forrester Old Vine Reserve Chenin Blanc, 2018, from Stellenbosch, South Africa. This has a 3.5 rating on Vivino. There are apple, melon and vanilla tones. Its minerality went well with the turbot.

With the duck we tried a Zero-G Zweigelt, 2016. This is a light red from Wagram, Austria with a Vivino rating of 3.5. This is an easy drinking red, with red berries and sour cherry notes, perfect with duck

With the desserts we chose a fabulous ice wine the Pillitteri Estates, Midnight Frost Vidal grape, 2015, from Niagara Peninsula, Canada. This has a high 4.4 rating on Vivino. It is sweet but with some acidity that balances it beautifully. There are caramel and pineapple notes that worked very well with the chocolate and caramel in the dessert
