The Magnificent Julia Child

Julia is remembered for her fondness for wine; her distinctive voice; her staunch defence of the use of butter (with margarine invariably referred to as “that other spread”) and cream; her  “impeccably clean towel”; and her closing line at the end of every show:This is Julia Child, Bon appétit!

Julia Child was an American chef, author and television personality. She is recognised for bringing French cuisine to the American public with her debut cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, and her subsequent television programs, the most notable of which was The French Chef, which premiered in 1963. It was one of the first cooking shows on American television.

The show was filmed live-to-videotape from start to finish, leaving little room for mistakes. The resulting occasional accidents became a popular trademark of Child’s on air presence, used as “teachable moments” to encourage viewers to relax about the task’s demands.

“Courage and….. Bon appétit!” – Julia Child
